先代の Vario-Elmar-R 35-70mm/f3.5 を引き継いだモデル。先代の基本設計がミノルタであった事は周知の事実であるが、本レンズは、ライカ社内での設計、日本での製造である。通常、ズーム・レンズに付きもののワイド端で樽型、テレ端で糸巻き型の歪曲も良く補正され、しかも最短が全域で６０ｃｍまたテレ端を超えたマクロ・モードでは１０ｃｍ程度までの近接撮影が可能である。この近接能力については、先代（１ｍ）を圧倒的に凌駕している。但し、フィルター・ワークに関しては、ピント・リングの回転と共にレンズ前群が回転してしまい、先代から見れば改悪ということになってしまう。特に表記はないが非球面を用い、良好な描写性能を持つが、逆光或いは半逆光時にフレアーの発生が避けられないので、（かなり盛大に出る）ハレ切り等、注意が必要。
Vario-Elmar-R 35-70mm/f4 was introduced as a successor of its namesake with f3.5 in 1997. The great advantage of this lens against its predecessor is its shortest focusing distance of 0.6 m compared to 1m of old one. In addition, this lens has a Macro position which allows you to take a macro-photo, easily. Despite of these adavantage, there are two points to be raised as being a serious photographer, one is that the front-element rotates along with focusing which makes difficult to use PL filter. Secondly, the lense has almost no effective protection against backlight situation which results a flare.

収納時、ストロボ撮影時には写真の様に、フードを逆さにして鏡筒先端にネジ込む事が可能である。優れた点はこの状態で、フォーカス・リングを回すことができ、フードの紛失等のアクシデントに対応している。
The hood can be set in reverse and screwed into the front element which avoids the loss of the hood when you store it or use with the strobe unit. The beauty is that even hood is set as shown in the left picture, you can still rotate a focusing ring.

| しっかりとした作りは立派なものだが、その茶筒状の鏡筒の為、若干外観の魅力に乏しい。これは筆者の偏見であるが、やはりデコボコしていて欲しい。なんとなれば、実写の折、ズーム・リングを探すことが多かったからである。またこのズーム・リングはスムースに回転はするものの若干重く、指に負担が大きい。また、ズーム域両端で「コツン」と停止位置に当たった感触が、Vario-Elmar-R 80-200mm/f4 と同じである事から両方とも同じメーカーの製品かもしれない。
You will be satisfied with its robust construction. The touch of zoom ring at its both end of focal lengths are so similar to Vario-Elmar-R 80-200mm/f4, that leads us to the understanding whether these two lenses were manufactured in the same maker!?
Due to its tube-like casing, the zoom ring requires a little bit heavy torque.

実写では、比較的「端正」な写りをし、あまり濃厚な表現はしない。というのが私の印象である。マクロ域はボケ味も含めると「オマケ」とも言えるが、あって便利な機能ではある。
幻のレンズ、Vario-Elmarit-R 35-70mm/f2.8 ASPH の製造中止後、ズーム中域を受け持っているがそれにしても35-70mm というスペックはあまりにもである。せめて、ワイド端にもう一頑張りして欲しい。確かに、28-70mm はあるが、f値が 3.5-4.5 と変化するのに加え、歪曲が結構あるのでなんとか頑張って欲しいのである。
The taste or color of this lens summarized as water-paintings rather than oil-paintings. However, such impression might change under different daylight situation. Macro position is a novelty for this lens user. After the termination of legendary Vario-Elmarit-R 35-70mm/f2.8 ASPH, this lens has to bear the same zoom range. Of course, there is a Vario-Elmar-R 28-70mm/f3.5-4.5 however, this lens suffers from visible distortion as well as its floating f-stop.
