随分長い歴史のあるレンズにも関わらず、本稿を書く時点で再確認したが、初代（Type I）以降、フードの内蔵等、外観上の変更はあったが約３０年の長きにわたってレンズ構成そのものは全く変更されていなかった。そして１９９８年やっとこのレンズが登場した。ライカ社がここに来て標準レンズをリニューアルするとは思ってもいなかったが、登場した製品は期待に応えるレンズであった。同時期に発売されたＲ８に対するライカ社からの贈り物であろうか？

The first Summilux-R 50mm/f1.4 was introduced back in 1969. Since then, the hood became built-in and the yellow 50 mark was attached for the easy identification, the same construction has been hired until recently. In 1998 this Type II( E60 model) was introduced 2 years after they had introduced R8 as if it celebrates an appearance of R8 or they knew a proverb 'put new wine in old bottle'. Now, put a new standard lens to new R8 !

圧巻の押し出し。ＲレンズはＲ８のファインダー内表示に見られるようにｆ１．４より明るいレンズを視野に入れていないのが残念ではあるが、このレンズと Summilux-R 35mm/f1.4 及び Summilux-R 80mm/f1.4 の３本はその素晴らしい実力と嫌みの無い描写で今後ともＲフリークの支持を受け続けるのだと思う。

Put new lens to an old body, haha! It still works well ! You will eenjoy a brilliant view through the viewfinder. Together with Summilux-R 35mm/f1.4 and Summilux-R 80mm/f1.4 the Leica's legend continues.

A little regret is that the Leica is not anticipating to produce any lenses beyond f 1.4, how do we know? The answer is R8's LCD display with the maximum apperture up to f1.4.
